Understanding SMD Electrolytic Capacitor Coding

By on July 15, 2010

ecap

If you are repairing Mainboard I’m sure you would have came across SMD electrolytic capacitor that have marking on top of the cap. Some value are quite direct like 47 and 16 means 47 microfarad  with 16 volt working voltage. However some SMD e-caps that have alphabet letter and you need to find out what is the meaning of those alphabet letter. Please click on  the photo to visit the website and scroll down to check on the answer.

        HI Samuel,

It is 100uf but not sure on the voltage. Since laptop uses low dc voltage a 25 volt would be safe.

    Hey!

I have an aluminum surface mount capacitor marked:

    x4507
    100
    25T

I am assuming that means 100UF and 25V, but I have no clue what the first part means. I also have some where the top section is "33080", "41514", and "V1214". Any help on what these mean would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

      Hi corey,

Yes the value of 100uf 25 volt is right but I have no info on those front code. I have searched the net but could not find any answer. It could be codes that can be understood by the manufacturers.

      Hi Hasan,

Most probably 100uf with 25 volt. You can use your digital capacitor tester to confirm the value.

      Hi Hasan,

If the e-cap is very small then it could be a 1200uf with 4 volt working voltage. I suggest that you confirm the uf by checking it with a digital capacitor tester.

      Hi Denny,

Sometime those code could only be understood by the manufacturer. In order to confirm that the cap is indeed 100UF you can use a digital capacitance to test it.

100 means 100uf and the code you have to refer to the respective website for answer. From experience dc voltage in laptop is not high so a smd 100uf with 35 volt could do the job well.

      Hi Muthazhagan,

Since the cap value is in coding format thus I suggest that you check it using the digital capacitance value. If 100VFC you got 100uf this means the VFC is the microfarad. If you get 1F6 as 1.6 or 16 uf this means the 100VFC is the capacitor working voltage.

      Hi Mav,

It is 470uf as for the voltage, if the board is using 5 volt then you can use a 10 v or 16 volt cap.
