The complaint from the customer was while watching a movie, suddenly he heard a loud bang from the player and after that the DVD player was totally dead.

I have tested the player and indeed it was no power. I opened the cover and saw that he fuse and the main filter electrolytic capacitor were bad. The e-cap was exploded as you can see from the photo below:

I continued to check on all the components in the power supply and all seems to be working fine except the power IC. The power IC legs were shorted to hot ground.

I then replaced the two faulty components except the main fuse. I did not connect the fuse as I need to do another test.

5

I connected a 40 watt bulb to the back of the main fuse soldering points and then powered On the player. The DVD player came back to life ( no more short circuit) and this means I can put the fuse back and fully turn the set On again.

Troubleshooting and repairing equipment with no power symptom is not that tough. What you need is more practice and practice will turn you into a better repairer.

Good job, Suranga. The bulb not lit just means that there are no more shorts.

Good repair and nice explanation.but most of the time we just use not less than 60watt lamp to chek the shorted circuit.

    Hey Suranga,

Good job! You are right - the only way to improve our skills is to practice - mistakes and all!
I am only relatively new to the electronic repair area, but thinking back to just a few years ago to the skills that I have now proves that all it takes is a LOT of study, research, picking other peoples brains and (safely) playing with electronics.

    I Love it!!

Deat Suranga, your thread is awesome except a remark of bulb power! Normally it should be 100watts. Good continuation.

As a matter of fact, there is not an established rule about the ideal lamp power used as the provisional safety test. It depends of some other details, mainly the rated consumption of the gadget being serviced. The higher the lamp power, the less the protection of the equipment. On the other hand, a small wattage lamp means a higher resistance in series with the serviced equipment. The question is: at what extent could this extra resistance affect the test of the gadget being serviced? The answer is: it depends on the knowledge, sensibility, experience and skills of the repairer, among other less important things. Another thing to consider is: it's a provisional safety test, in order to confirm that there is not a significant short circuit present. Indeed, the final operational test (that proves the correct working of the equipment) will be performed further, with the fuse replaced on its place.

Does this mean the player uses crappy parts? Would you recommend against buying one?
